A film sales agent is a professional or company that acts as an intermediary between filmmakers and distributors, with the primary role of selling the distribution rights of a film. They are responsible for marketing the film to potential buyers, which can include film distributors, broadcasters, streaming platforms, and other media outlets across various territories. They typically earn a commission based on the sales they secure, which can vary depending on the agreement with the filmmaker.
Sales Agents are extremely helpful because they have existing relationships with distributors and can protect you in the negotiation. But if you cannot secure one, you are not lost! If you’re looking for a worldwide VOD, you can use an aggregator to go straight to platform.
There is not an exact right time to approach a sales agent - it’s somewhat dependent on the project. If you have high profile talent, a project that has gone through prominent labs or fellowships, or is based on a short film that appeared at a lot of festivals, you can start engaging sales agents before the project is finished, and a good sales agent can watch a cut and give notes. If you get accepted to a major film festival that has an active buyer’s market (Sundance, SXSW, TIFF, Cannes), then it’s a particularly good time to approach a sales agent. They can be most successful when there is the most heat and attention on the project (which is why a really great and active crowdfunding campaign can do well to get a sales agent’s attention as well!)
