What is Educational?

Educational distribution means making your film available to libraries, universities, and schools.

90% of the educational market comes from institutions of higher learning—universities, two- and four-year colleges, community colleges, etc. The remaining 10% comes from K-12 schools, nonprofit organizations, public libraries and other government organizations—all of which pay less per copy than universities.

In order to succeed, research schools, professors and courses your film works for, do direct outreach.

Irregular lengths are OK. “What do I do with my 27-minute film?” Sell a bunch of copies to the educational market and change the world in the process. Read more.

Managing Your Own Educational Distribution

Let’s say you are forgoing working with an educational distributor and are going to handle on your own. You’ll need to do a few things

  1. Research. Make a target list of schools and libraries based on the audience for your film.
  2. Craft your pitch. Your email pitch to them should answer both “Why your film?” and “Why now?”
  3. Set your pricing.
  4. Build a process. You’ll need a tight process for receiving signatures on the educational license, requesting and receiving payment, and sending your film.
